Key West Poker Run By The Numbers: MTI leads the massive pack

If MTI’s turnout numbers continue to rise — and based on last year’s turnout, they likely will — the high-performance catamarans and center consoles built by the Wentzville, Mo., company will might come to understand 20 percent of the Florida Powerboat Key West Poker Run fleet of 250 boats. MTI currently has 43 boats registered for the 30th Anniversary Race, which runs Nov. 8-14 and starts in Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Grove and Miami.

Contacted at today’s Performance Boat Center fall race on the Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri, Taylor Scism, the company’s customer relations manager, was thrilled to hear that MTI’s big boat featured the Florida Powerboat Club’s season-ending event.

“It’s amazing,” said Scism, who will race alongside John Tomlinson in a 39-foot Factory Stock 450R Class MTI catamaran in the concurrent American Power Boat Association/Union Internationale Motonatique World Offshore Championships produced by Race World Offshore. “The Florida Keys are one of the best places to go boating and we love our guests coming to experience them.”

Presenting sponsor of the Florida Powerboat Key West Poker Run, Cigarette Racing Team has 25 boats entered to date.

The Key West event drew 51 MTI entries in 2021, which was enough to win the Florida Powerboat Club’s Manufacturers’ Cup award for the super-fast powerboat builder.

“It looks like MTI will most likely win the Manufacturers Cup again,” said club chairman Stu Jones. “Next in line is Nor-Tech with the 30 boats currently entered currently followed by Cigarette Racing Team – our main sponsor – sitting comfortably with 25 teams entered.”

Nor-Tech owners always represent Florida Powerboat Club events strongly, especially at the annual Key West event.

Skater Powerboat fans will have no shortage of boats in the mix. Thanks to its loyal customers, the Douglas, Michigan company has 22 catamarans registered for the event.

“Mystic Powerboats and Midnight Express are also still doing well – each has nearly a dozen teams registered at present – and Outerlimits has moved up a notch from previous years, now holding 14 teams registered on the list,” Jones said. “Fountain has 13 registered poker teams, Statement Marine has 11 and Blackwater/Deep Impact has nine.”

Fans of fast sailing in Key West for the Florida Powerboat Club event, plus three days of offshore racing, will be able to catch most of the most exotic cats and V-bottoms and sponsor docks outside the seafood restaurant Conch Republic from Thursday to Sunday.

Skateboard enthusiasts will find their happiness at the Key West Poker Run.
