The current Covid outbreak in Florida is so severe that the state’s population would be banned from traveling to the United States if it were to be “another country,” a CNN doctor and medical analyst has said.
Dr Jonathan Reiner, in an interview with the Network’s Jim Acosta on Sunday, said the viral load in Floridians was high enough to justify shutting it down if it was “another country.”
Only Louisiana and Botswana, a landlocked country in southern Africa, are currently experiencing a larger increase in Covid infections – largely caused by the Delta variant.
“The viral load in Florida is so high right now, there are really only two places on the planet where it’s higher,” said Dr. Reiner. “One is Louisiana and the other is Botswana.”
He continued, “It’s so high in Florida that I think if Florida was another country we should consider banning travel from Florida to the United States.”
The state recorded 23,903 more cases on Friday, surpassing its one-day total for the third time in a week.
Infections are 38% higher than a fortnight ago, according to figures from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and hospitalizations are 21% higher.
Both figures are beyond what was reported at the start of the Covid epidemic in Florida.
Dr Reiner, in a warning to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, told the Republican to “back off” because “people are dying in Florida.”
“He needs to back down a bit,” said the doctor for Mr DeSantis, who has refused to allow businesses and local authorities to order the wearing of masks – among other measures to slow the spread of Covid.
“We have a governor more interested in politics than saving lives,” MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski said on Sunday. “The DeSantis variant, which is why one in four new Covid cases comes out of Florida.”
“It’s completely preventable. And the governor of Florida owns this one. The most tragic part of this story is that almost all of these hospitalizations and deaths would and could have been avoided if misguided Americans hadn’t followed the insane teachings of a growing death cult.
